Pennsy Greenway, Shererville IN

I woke up to dark clouds.  We were forecasted to get rain later in the day but apparently that storm came in earlier.  I was outside pulling weeds when I felt the first drop hit me at 7:30am.  By 9am the heavy rain came; at times we had flash lightning and thunder before it cleared up by 1:30pm.

By 2pm I was walking the southern part of the Pennsy trail, starting at the Rohrman Park in Shererville and walking north. Parts of the road were flooded and it was a cool, refreshing 71F with overcast clouds, one of the more comfortable days here yet.  I wish I had had this kind of weather earlier in my visit.

The Pennsy greenway follows Rohrman Avenue for 0.7 miles, then curves around a traffic circle at Cline Avenue, goes under US30, and then follows Junction Avenue for two miles before reaching US41.  It's almost a straight southeast to northwest path, with a few curves along to way to break up the monotony.  The path is a dark asphalt that still looks new, yet this was built and opened in 2011.  How could I have missed knowing about this trail all this time?

I didn't come across other users until I got north of US30 as the path enters downtown Shererville, goes past Redar park where there are restrooms, and then the police station and town court.  I didn't come across any trash until the path passes a small skate park.  I turned around at 2.6 miles when I reached a town baseball field.  I rested here for Zeke before heading back the way I came.  The overcast sky was now clearing and it got warm.  There's a small parking lot here for trail users; I will park there when I come back and continue the Pennsy trail all the way to Centennial Park.

I drove to Highland-Munster after the walk, checking out the various taprooms. The Brewhouse in Wholesale Foods in Highland didn't have anything appealing to me, the Byway Brewery in south Hammond now doesn't allow dogs at all, even on their patio, and Region Ale in Highland was closed for sanitizing.  I settled with Highland's Brewfest, where I sat on the patio with  Zeke trying out various IPAs.  This was the first place where I was introduced to self-pouring of beer five years ago.  The neighborhood across the street on Kennedy Avenue is where my earliest childhood memories were formed.  Service was friendly, but in the end the only beers I really liked were two powerful stouts.

I finished off the day ordering a deep-dish spinach pizza from Edwardo's and walked another mile of the Pennsy trail by Centennial park while the pizza was baking.  I wanted to try this highly-rated pizzeria.  (The pie wasn't bad, but the dough was dense and flavorless. ) The trail along Centennial Park is very busy with cyclists, runners, dogwalkers..  One roller-blading woman came too close to me as I had to get out of the way of a protruding branch, yelling "Keep that thing away from me!."  She was referring to Zeke.
