We didn't leave Erin's house until 4:30pm. I told Erin we'd be back in two hours, after a stop in Chesterton for ice cream at Dog Days Ice creamery. I like my time alone with Ethan and I can tell that he does, too. I knew we wouldn't be breaking any distances today; I came to spend time with Ethan. I went with whatever he decided to do.
He picked Coffee Creek again. It's close by and scenic and I had no objections. We hoped to find some more rocks from the Valpo Rocks painters, but none were seen and the creek was muddy from recent rains. We walked the same route as last time but cut out the fake waterfall area, making this a two-mile walk. I must say the shaded creek is very pleasant for humans and dogs alike. I could do this trail every day if I lived nearby!
The trails weren't too bad after all the rain, too. There were a few muddy sections and some erosion along the 5K trail, the preserve's main trail, but there were few bugs out. The low humidity did bring out more people and dogs than last time.
I promised Ethan we'd stop by the Dog Days Ice Creamery in Chesterton. I like gourmet ice cream, I just don't care for the gourmet prices. And despite the business name, no dogs are allowed in the place except for small dogs. I kept Zeke in the car and made this a quick take-out.
It's a popular place. We walked in wearing masks but they weren't required by patrons. I wanted pistachio or stracciatella gelato, but neither were offered. Instead, today's flavors were some foo-foo flavors better suited for a goofy sixth-grader. I settled for strawberry, Ethan had chocolate and both were very good. My only gripe is that I prefer my strawberries not to be frozen. Chilled and thawed is how I like them in my ice cream.
